Mary King's eNews - A Great Time to Start to Build Your Wealth

January 2008

Hello,

Welcome to 2008. The promise of good things lies ahead. In numerology 2008 is a number 'One' year, the beginning of a nine-year cycle. Whatever you start in a ‘One’ year may have ramifications for years to come.

So this is a great year to start to build your wealth.

Men and women have different perspectives regarding wealth and money. Men focus on material assets, while women’s assets are their children and relationships.

I have often noticed how commonly held is the opinion that the female focus is on maintaining healthy relationships and nurturing, while men pursue advancement in their careers and acquiring material goods.

There is no right or wrong about any of this. However the result may be that women are financially disadvantaged bearing the burden of the household’s financial responsibilities.

It is admirable that women are the keepers of relationship and, while not denigrating this wonderful quality, it’s vital that women start to think in terms of looking after their own future and their ability and responsibility to make choices.

Few women are financially free. Most rely on a partner, a family, an employer or the government to take care of them. Many younger women are dependent on their credit card and ‘looking good’.

How good would it be to know you were Financially Free and able to focus on whatever you desire?

Recently I lunched with a woman who shared with me the story of her desire. This is her story:

After 40 years of marriage to the same man she commissioned a designer to create a necklace that would reflect her life story. The necklace was crafted mainly of silver. There are forty links, each representing a year of marriage. Each link is a slightly different shape because each year of her marriage has been different. Seven of the links have the birth date of each of her children. Five gold links represent her grandchildren.

In anticipation of the creation she wrote to a friend, “It will illustrate a partnership of 40 years, marked indelibly by seven astounding births, and now profoundly extended by the births of five amazing grandchildren. This, then, is my life in silver and gold!”

When the necklace was finished the cost was more than she anticipated. And she did not have enough money. She decided against asking her husband to contribute. She pondered how she would get the money to pay for it.

Eventually, in the trepidation so many women are used to in matters of money, she approached their financial adviser. Forgetting it was her money; she asked if they would sell some shares. She was delighted when the answer was, “Of course!” She was even more surprised when they asked, “Is that all you need?”

This beautiful story touched my heart. My friend was delighted with the adviser's response. But wait a moment. Whose money was it anyway? It was her money. Not the adviser's. They work for her. And we forget this too often. How easily do women feel they have to 'ask' for their own money?

I wondered how many other women are in a similar position.

Many women are excellent at caring for the people around them and do so to the extent they can neglect pursuing their own personal desires and as a result are financially dependent.

I believe women need to start to think in terms of creating Financial Freedom. And one of the routes is to create streams of passive income (money you receive without working). It’s imperative women learn to save and invest.

My passion for making money through property has me conducting a one-day Real Estate course on 2nd February.
