Mary King's eNews - Setting Goals
June 2007
Hello,
This month June 2007 Gabrielle and I were pilgrims walking from Porto in Portugal to Santiago in Spain on the Camino Santiago de Compostela Portugues. It was a fabulous experience. We walked along the way-marked path that led us along between fields, on country roads, main roads, creek beds, through forests of Eucalypts and Pine, over cobble stones and sets of granite blocks. We felt very free as we walked along singing songs. Often we could remember only half the words. Whenever we had a doubt about which way to go all we had to do was watch the signs and the way would become clear. We followed painted yellow arrows on poles, posts, trees, rocks, and footpaths and often also a yellow shell on a blue tile pointing to Santiago.
Whenever we were unsure of our direction someone or something would point the way for us. Sometimes a person would indicate the path to take. At one time when we really could not find a yellow arrow a group of dogs barked as if to say, This way. When we walked towards them before long we discovered another yellow arrow.
The universe will give signs. If you have a goal, follow the signs. You will be lead to your goal.
What do you want for yourself? Can you write down specifically what that is and when you want to have it? This may be harder than you think. I encourage you to start with one goal, write it down and read it to yourself every day. Let yourself dream big. Then watch the signs the universe supplies to support you having your goal. You must take action. You must act on the sign. You must follow where it leads. The path may not be direct. A rocket on its way to the moon changes direction and corrects course many times before it reaches destination.
June 30 is upon us and the end of the financial year. The government will give each of you a cut in your tax payment and a further relaxing of the tax scales. The 15% rate has been raised from $25,000 a year to $30,000 a year. That means a tax cut of $750 a year for most employees. This is money you are used to managing without. It is a bonus. Sadly many will just dismiss the tax cut as being insignificant and simply spend more. Use this money wisely and pay yourself first. As a smart money manager you know financial success comes to those who pay themselves first and you understand that large amounts accrue from the accumulation of small sums over time. Take steps to capture the tax cut before it is frittered away with the rest of your regular money. A simple strategy is to increase your home loan payment by $63 a month. You will save a huge amount of interest over time and will give yourself a safety buffer if rates rise. If your home is paid off you could pay the money directly to a mutual fund as a regular and painless way of investing (contact an adviser to set up a regular plan). The secret to becoming wealthy is to ensure your investment is the first item out of your income. If you are saving for a home get started or include this bonus money now.
